Relocating a Historical Steam Engine
(Our Progress So Far)

In April the ground dried up, the grass started to grow and we assessed what needed to be done.
In May we attended the Salute to Heroes event at Memorial Park, did some sprucing up, and installed the derailing device found when we dug up the siding at the rear of Rona Cashway.
As of early June we are still plagued with vandals and are forced to cover the caboose windows with polycarbonate sheeting thanks to Lindsay Glass & Window Ltd.
Mid June, and with an Eastern Ontario Development Program (Local Initiatives) grant for partial funding approved by Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation, the real work gets under way as Prepared Surfaces Custom Sandblasting & Staining of Minden commences the messy operation of sandblasting of the locomotives.
Overnight it rained. Not tragic, but a real lesson in how fast rust can appear.
And as of July 1st we have a basic paint job completed on both locomotives with thanks to Prepared Surfaces, Lindsay Color Your World (I. C. I. Paint), the City of Kawartha Lakes (Parks & Recreation) and Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation.
Early September and we commence work on extending the tenders coal bunker to its’ original dimensions and sealing the water hatch, with a little help from Larry Burnett Welding.
The coal bunker is secured against vandals as is the steam locomotive cab.
And we give her a replacement bell. Not the original, as someone has already tried to make off with that.
Larry (Burnett Welding) and Marc (Lindsay Glass & Window) figure out how to replace the broken headlight lenses with polycarbonate sheeting.
The caboose ladders receive protective screening in an effort to prevent access to the roof.
And the display is beginning to look a lot different with thanks to Lindsay Glass & Window Ltd., Prepared Surfaces, Color Your World, Larry Burnett Welding, Van Halteren Machine & Tool Ltd., the City of Kawartha Lakes (Parks & Recreation), Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation and our dedicated volunteers.
As of November 2, 2010 we now have the reconditioned stairs in place.
